Crop Protection in Leicestershire

L.W.A. Crop Protection

L.W.A. Crop Protection Section operates within the Leicestershire area, working with the local farming communities offering free crop protection.

We also exhibit at several County shows. Our objective is to develop and maintain a lasting cooperation with local farms that are experiencing excessive seasonal damage to their crops by wood pigeons, corvids and other vermin. The fact is that wood pigeons diet includes brassica crops such as cabbage, sprouts and cauliflower causing damage to young plants, also they will eat clover leaves, autumn rape in fact most crops will attract wood pigeon as and when they are available, this represents an approximate 9% loss of yield to farmers in some areas. The estimated damage caused by wood pigeons in the U.K. is in excess of £3 million and the population of the wood pigeon is estimated at around 2.5 million pairs.

We Offer Crop Protection Cover

The arrival of the Canada Geese has created a problem in some areas, their inefficient digestive system when grazing causes them to produce droppings every 6 minutes which contain harmful bacteria if inadvertently swallowed and makes grassed areas unattractive and footpaths slippery. The weight of an adult goose is 18lbs and it eats the equivalent of its body weight every 4 days this in relation to loss of crops is another loss of revenue to farmers.

We have a membership of volunteers who can provide a 24/7 crop protection cover, each member has compulsory insurance through the British Association for Shooting and Conservation. They are experienced shots and are competent in field crafts.
