Leicestershire Wildfowlers Wood Pigeon Shooting
Welcome to this section, from section-head Steve Barby, and assistant Jack Harris, who run the pigeon roost shoots for the club.
The shoots start at the end of January and finish at the end of March. We have a full programme of shooting, meeting on Thursday and Saturday evenings. We go to many different venues, across the four counties of Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, and Rutland, where we shoot pigeons and corvids, on many of the big sporting estates in the area.

Wood Pigeon Roost Shooting Information
The number of Guns out on an evening can vary from twelve up to sixty, and our aim is to cover every wood in the area we are shooting in that night. One of our estates is 18,000 acres, which we visit twice a year. If the weather is favourable, i.e. a good wind, the shooting can be very good, with every Gun getting some shooting, and bagging some pigeons for the pot.
We do insist on everyone using fibre wads, which if you are shooting under 40 yards, we kill any unlucky pigeon (if you can point your gun in the right direction!).
Joining A Roost Shoot
The Roost Shoots are a great social gathering, with members meeting early so as to have a social catch up with friends old and new.
We have a fair way of choosing woods, by way of a draw system: so, if you come with a friend, you would draw a wood for two guns; if you come on your own, you’ll be paired off with a shoot buddy for the evening.
If you are new, you will be looked after, and placed in a wood by one of our experienced members or myself. If you are inexperienced, you will be mentored and shown how to behave. In a few weeks’ time you would be signed off as a safe pigeon shooter.
Memberships & Venues
The venue for the meetings are shown by Satnav, OS Maps, and “what3words”, so you can’t get lost!
Next season, when you are a full member of the LWA, the cost of a shoot is £5, which is remarkable value for a roost shoot. In fact, some of our regular guns will come to all eighteen evening shoots. Last year we had on offer 550 places, so there is plenty of scope to get in some great shooting.
The shoots are advertised in the Pintail book in November each year and bookings are taken by telephone, to me, at a date set in December. Members can call me during a set two-hour window each evening, for a three-week duration. During this call I can discuss your experience, your knowledge, your safety, and book you in for the shoots, and organise payment. In addition, when we have monthly club meetings in January and February, any shoot spaces that are still available can be booked there and then with myself.
We look forward to seeing you in the field!
